The guidance
program is designed to help students in a number of ways including, but not
limited to the following areas:
·
career
exploration and planning,
·
academic
planning for high school and college or technical school, testing programs such
as Plan, Psat, Act, SAT, ASVAB, and THEA, applications for college entrance,
scholarships or grants including the
·
FAFSA
and Texas Grant and numerous other financial aids.
Listed below are web sites to assist students and parents in indicated
research:
INTEREST INVENTORIES help one explore careers that might be
enjoyable to them. One good inventory is provided online by the Texas Workforce
Commission at http://www.cdr.state.tx.us. Go to Oscar and take the full flight,
then click on assessment. After answering the questions, the site gives in dark
italics the matches to careers per workforce codes and indicates the amount of
training or college necessary for that occupation.
Career clusters
is another inventory which can be accessed at http://www.careerclusters.org/pdf/preffered/InterestSurvey.pdf#search=.
After completing the survey one can the access
http://www.achievetexas.org/Implementation.htm and scroll down to the 16
clusters. Click on the appropriate cluster to determine occupations available
and training necessary.
Other interest
inventories are included in the ASVAB, the Plan and Career Scope.
CAREER PLANNING is enhanced by referring to Occupational
Outlook Handbook at http://www.stats.bls.gov/oco/home.htm.
This site gives descriptions of occupations, working conditions, pay,
employment future, forecasts and much more. Pull down the alphabet screen and
investigate crime scene investigator or any other occupation.
ACADEMIC PLANNING is expedited by many online sites including:
http://www.achievetexas.org, http://www.collegefortexans.com, http://www.gocollege.com, and http://www.campustours.com.
TESTING for
estimation of success in college as well as to satisfy entrance requirements
can be accessed online at the following sites: http://www.collegeboard.com, http://www.act.org, and http://www.thea.nesinc.com.
PRACTICE FOR TESTING is available in the high school library in
the form of study guides for the SAT, ACT, and the THEA. Online sites to take
practice tests include: http://www.4tests.com,
http://www.thea.nesinc.com/practice.htm,
and http://www.asvabprogram.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=overview.test.
FINANCIAL AID information in the form of scholarships is
available in the counselor's office and is reported to students on a regular
basis. Online access can be gleaned from the following sites: http://www.scholarships.com, http://www.finaid.org, http://www.fafsa.ed.gov, and many others. It
is not wise to pay for scholarship information since that service is readily
available at no charge. The high school counselor will assist any student and
their parents in the application process. We invite financial aid personnel
from colleges to speak on our campus yearly. Another good source of aid is for
the student to apply at the financial aid office of the school they plan to
attend since each institution has aid unique to their campus through
endowments. Aid may be based on need or merit. The senior year in high school
is the time to apply for federal aid usually in January or February and parent
income records are necessary. The parent may not want to pay that early, but
they need to be figured to answer the questions on the application.
APPLICATIONS for admission may be obtained from the
institution one is to attend or a common application acceptable to all four
year state supported college and universities may be completed once and
duplicated. http://www.commonapp.org.
GENERAL COLLEGE INFORMATION may be obtained by accessing the web site
for a particular institution. A search for the web address of a particular
institution may be done at www.google.com.
FEE WAIVERS are attainable through the counselor's
office, if one qualifies. Generally the eligibility will be similar to free lunch
qualifications or if a student is a foster child they will qualify.
MILITARY careers are available and recruiters from
the branches of government contact the students to make them aware of the
opportunities for careers and financial aid through their agencies. Profile
Magazine is a source of information on the military and can be accessed through
the school library or online.
